Clip Crates are the evolution of the plywood crates we started making in 2011 from offcuts in the workshop, as Christmas presents for friends and family. People noticed them on Instagram and started asking for their own, so we started selling them properly. We sold over 15,000 of that original crate, glued and nailed together.
The problem was freight. Those crates shipped fully built, so we were paying to move mostly air around the country. In 2016 we started developing a flat-pack version and came up with the clip system: trickier to machine than glue and nails, but far stronger, and it packs down flat for you to build at home. We retired the old design for good.
Most people use them for records, around 60 LPs comfortably in a standard crate, but we've seen books, Lego, household detritus, hallway stacks, wardrobes, retail displays, and hi-fi setups with a turntable on top. Stack one crate, or build a whole wall.

“High quality stuff, shipping was fast and free too. The modular design has been great after moving house several times with far too many records. Being able to reconfigure them has been very helpful.”
“An incredible product, made by an incredible business. The crates look beautiful and the quality is top notch. Jem looked after me from the very beginning, ensuring I purchased the right product for my vinyl needs.”
1. Spring steel, made in Melbourne. The clips are manufactured for us in Melbourne from spring steel. This makes the crate more complex to machine, but so much stronger and more robust than the original glue-and-nail design from the early days, and it still packs flat.
2. Assembly takes minutes, no tools. Panels clip together by hand. Watch how it's done.
3. Taking one apart. Poke each clip out from the inside with a chopstick, or our dedicated clip removal tool, and it flat-packs again. Unlikely you'll ever need to, but it's there if you want to break a crate down for long-term storage or similar.
4. Why we bothered. The original glued and nailed crate shipped fully assembled, so we were paying freight to move mostly air around the country. The clip system was the fix: flat-pack, shippable anywhere, and stronger than what came before.
Clip Crates are built from Australian grown Hoop Pine plywood. A few white birch variants are still listed on the range while we sell through old stock. Available raw or sealed, sealed is finished with a water-based clear coat for longevity.
Around 60 LPs comfortably in a standard crate, more if you pack them tight.
Same clip system, different opening. The Vinyl Browser is built so cover art faces out for browsing, standard crates are set up for stacking and general storage.
Yes, people often stack them. Above two or three crates, we recommend fixing them together with small screws and securing the stack back to the wall for safety. Customers have built record walls seven crates high this way. The crate itself can take the weight; stacking in a brick pattern also makes for a stronger, more stable wall.
Spring steel clips, made for us in Melbourne, lock the panels together under tension: strong, but flexible enough to handle an impact if you ever drop one. They make the panels trickier to manufacture, but that pays off with a crate that flat-packs, ships anywhere, and assembles in minutes.
A Clip Crate built for browsing, cover art facing out, so you flip through records the way you would in a shop. We adapted it from an accessory on our original crate design after enough customers asked for it.
If a crate can hold a stack of records, it'll handle books, Lego, and general household storage without any trouble.
Flat-pack. Your first crate takes a few minutes to put together, and once you've got the hang of it you can whip through a whole stack.
