Made here in Castlemaine
Open Monday to Thursday, 8am–4:30pm. Need a Saturday pick-up? Message Jem — he lives locally and can often sort something.
Our workshop is at 15 Fitzgeralds Close, Castlemaine, Victoria — about 75 minutes north-west of Melbourne.
For the fastest reply, tap the little green Message Jem bubble at the bottom right of your screen.
You can also reach us on WhatsApp / SMS (0408 503 593), cuts@likebutter.com.au, or the contact page.
We do not have a retail furniture showroom as such, but we love showing people around the workshop — products in process, how we make things, and plenty of bits and pieces we can look at together while we chat through your shelving conundrum.
Get in touch to arrange a visit. We can also post material samples free on request, or send detailed photos. See our returns policy if you want extra peace of mind before ordering.
It depends how standard your project is:
Yes. Save 5% at checkout when you order through the KittaParts Builder.
Workshop pick-up in Castlemaine is separate: use code PICKUP at standard checkout for 10% off collection orders.
The discounts do not combine — it is one or the other, not 15%.
In the KittaParts Builder, use Share design to copy your configuration link. Export or save the PDF if the Builder offers it, and send both to us via Message Jem or email so we can match your exact layout.
Not always. If we are already working on your layout together, Message Jem with the updated brief. We may ask for a fresh Builder share link and PDF when we need to lock dimensions for production or re-quote a variation.
Builder checkout covers standard KittaParts rules: typical module sizes, standard 390 mm depth, and options built into the configurator.
Custom quote is needed for variations such as non-standard depth, custom dowels, wall-mount / floating setups, cable holes or cutouts, oversized lengths, or anything the Builder cannot price on its own. Configure the closest layout in the Builder first, then send the share link and PDF for Jem to quote the differences.
Yes. All prices on likebutter.com.au are in AUD and include GST for Australian customers.
Usually yes, but it depends where we are in production. If we have not started your custom job yet, we can often adjust scope after a deposit or full payment. We may need to issue a partial refund or charge for the variation. Message Jem as soon as something changes. See our Terms & Conditions for the formal wording.
We use one price list for everyone. Website prices are the same whether you are a homeowner, designer, or commercial client.
Standard catalog orders: we confirm your order, build, and dispatch within the lead time on the product page.
Custom work and Builder variations: we often prepare production drawings first, get your approval, then manufacture and dispatch. Timelines depend on scope.
We email you as things move. Message Jem anytime if you are unsure where your job is up to.

More detail: Materials.
We are moving towards offering sealed products only. Most sealed options leave the workshop in a water-based clear coat.
We have kept some raw options on products like Clip Crates and The Shelves to keep them more cost-effective, but we always recommend sealing for longevity and protection against moisture ingress. Each product page lists what is included for that product.
Yes. We can post samples out free on request. Message Jem with your address and which timbers you are comparing (Hoop Pine, Blackbutt, etc.).
You are also welcome to arrange a drop-in visit and see materials and products in person at the workshop.
Yes, ideally always.
We recommend sealed options when you want easier cleaning and extra protection from moisture and staining (kitchens, bathrooms, busy households). Sealed plywood also helps prevent discolouration over time.
Some products are available unsealed as raw, sanded timber to keep costs down. In low-wear settings you may be fine with light touch-ups using fine sandpaper (180 grit) if needed.
Wipe down with a damp cloth; avoid bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners. Timber furniture prefers gentle care — do not use harsh chemicals.
Full detail in our maintenance and care guide.
Yes. All timber changes colour when exposed to light. It is a characteristic of the material, not a flaw or a sign of poor quality.
Hoop Pine tends to warm and yellow gradually with UV exposure. Blackbutt deepens in tone. Both are doing exactly what natural timber does. Our water-based clear coat contains UV blockers that slow this process, but no finish stops it entirely. Think of it like a good sunscreen: it buys you time, not permanence.
The change is surface-only. It does not affect structural integrity, and it typically evens out across the piece over time. If anything, most people find the aged tone warmer and richer than the original.
More detail: UV light, timber, and colour change.
You have discovered the timber equivalent of a tan line.
The area under the object was shielded from light while the surrounding timber continued to change colour. Move whatever was sitting there, give it a few weeks of even exposure, and the difference will reduce. It will not vanish completely (the hidden area needs time to catch up), but it will even out.
This is most noticeable in the first year or two of ownership when the timber is still actively shifting. After that, the rate of change slows considerably.
Direct sunlight accelerates colour change but does not structurally damage sealed plywood furniture. The photodegradation process (UV light breaking down lignin in the timber surface) is a surface phenomenon. It affects appearance, not strength.
That said, sustained direct sun does speed up the colour shift noticeably. If you have got a north-facing room with strong afternoon sun hitting your shelves, expect faster and more uneven toning. Our UV-stable clear coat helps, but it is not a substitute for placing shelves out of direct beam sunlight where you want colour consistency.
Worth knowing: standard window glass blocks most UVB but lets through up to 75% of UVA radiation, the type responsible for colour change in timber. So indoors does not mean protected.
Nothing is wrong. Hoop Pine yellows with UV exposure. It is one of the defining characteristics of the species, and it is well documented. The lignin in the wood surface reacts with light and oxygen to produce warmer, yellower tones. It is the same process that makes old pine furniture look rich rather than raw.
Our clear coat contains UV absorbers that slow this. Water-based finishes (which is what we use) also amber far less than solvent or oil-based alternatives, which can themselves add yellow on top of the timber's natural shift.
If you want to maintain a lighter, more neutral tone longer: keep the shelves out of direct sunlight, and consider UV-filtering window film on windows that cop a lot of afternoon sun.
If it bothers you, yes, with time and patience rather than products.
The simplest approach: reposition objects so the lighter areas get even exposure, and let the timber catch up naturally over several weeks. For more significant variation, a light sand of the affected area followed by reapplication of a water-based clear coat (same sheen level as the original) can even things out. Message Jem if you want specific advice for your situation. It depends on the finish, the age of the piece, and how significant the difference is.
Yes. We customise The Shelves and KittaParts all the time: making units narrower or shorter, adjusting shelf spacing, adding extra shelves, and similar. It is a very common request.
Use the KittaParts Builder for modular KittaParts layouts, or Message Jem / the quote form for bespoke changes (bulkhead alignment, amp clearance, odd wall widths, and similar).
Yes. Standard KittaParts depth is 390 mm. We can build other depths as custom work (for example deeper TV stands or wide commercial units). Configure the closest layout in the Builder, then send the Share design link and PDF so Jem can quote your preferred depth.
Yes, absolutely. We try to make all of our products backwards compatible wherever we can, even as we continue to innovate.
Send photos or a list of what you already have and Message Jem with what you want to add. We will confirm compatibility before you order.
Yes. KittaParts is modular and threaded, so you can add modules, reconfigure shelves, and grow the system as your room or collection changes. We design for backwards compatibility wherever we can.
If you are planning an expansion, we usually recommend building what you already have in the KittaParts Builder, then adding whatever new components you need. Remove the parts you know you already own from the configuration before checkout, and that leaves you with only the extras to order.
Always Message Jem before you commit, especially on a larger expansion, so we can double-check compatibility and spacing. If anything is unclear while you are working through the Builder, just ask.
Sheet goods come in roughly 2400 mm lengths. On long wall runs a joint is usually planned at a sensible break in the module grid so the run stays structurally sound and as discreet as possible.
Yes. Cable holes, cutouts, and similar details are custom work. Message Jem with your layout, or send a KittaParts Builder Share design link and PDF, and we will quote and plan them for production.
Often yes, depending on the layout and your wall type. Wall-mount and floating setups need a custom quote and the right fixing hardware. Share your layout via the Builder or Message Jem and we will confirm what will work safely.
Yes. Standard 390 mm depth is sized for 12" LPs with room to pull a record without fighting the shelf. Start around 500 records and build to 2,500 and beyond as the collection grows. Bookends keep rows tidy; open bays between the dowels fit amp and receiver without enclosing your gear in a cabinet.
Full layouts, starter kits, and planning notes: KittaParts for vinyl.
About 80 LPs per bay if you like room to flip through them. Up to 100 when the bay is full. Message Jem with your collection size and wall width and we will configure bays to match.
A full bay of records is heavy, and people ask. At around 100 LPs per bay, you are looking at roughly 21 kg per bay. An Extra Large shelf spans four bays, so up to 400 records on one shelf level is around 84 kg. We have built walls with 28 bays or more, well over half a tonne of records when full, and have not seen the shelves sag or warp over time.
It comes down to wall mounting: bracket count and how you have fixed them to the wall matter on tall, heavy walls. Message Jem with your collection size and wall height and we will advise.
Yes. Almost all turntables fit on top between the caps. If not, we can do a flush top with no caps. A full KittaParts wall is a solid bit of timber, but we are making shelving, not audiophile isolation gear. Send us your deck dimensions if you want the top bay planned around a specific model.
Yes. Gear sits in an open bay between the dowels, not inside an enclosed cabinet. Leave a bay for your amp or receiver, turntable on top, and send us dimensions if anything is tight on clearance. Most gear fits with 455 mm between the dowels. We can plan custom dowel heights and cable notches in the back panel before we cut anything.
Yes. We regularly configure KittaParts for jewel cases, box sets, and 7" singles alongside LPs. CD bays use shorter custom dowel spacing, often 140 mm with a shallower shelf or custom back stops. Tell us what you store and we will lay it out properly.
Yes. Safety wall mounting brackets are supplied with every kit. On tall record walls they are essential. We make heavy-duty brackets that can be integrated into any kit on request. Safety comes down to the fixing between bracket and wall — Message Jem about weight and bracket count for large collections.
Yes. We can spray a custom tinted clear coat on most of our product range.
The process: you choose a Dulux paint code. We have that colour sampled in our water-based clear coat, the same finish we spray on our products. We are going from an opaque paint colour to a tinted clear, so the match will never be perfect: you will always see some of the timber tone coming through, depending on how heavy the tint is. Even so, it is a great starting point.
We send you a physical sample of the tint at a couple of different opacities so you can select and approve before we proceed. There is a setup charge to cover this sampling process, per job and per colour.
Message Jem for more information.
We offer free shipping Australia-wide on standard online orders. See our shipping policy.
Some large or custom items to remote areas (including Perth and the Northern Territory) may need an extra freight charge so courier costs are covered. We will tell you before you commit if that applies to your order.
Not at the moment — we ship within Australia only.
We are working on international licensed manufacturing agreements, including a pilot program in the United States. If you or someone you know would be a good fit as an international manufacturing partner, please contact us.
Ballpark dispatch from payment confirmation:
Product pages and your order confirmation are the source of truth if a specific item differs. We will be in touch if anything shifts.
It depends how your order is shipping.
FedEx courier: once your order leaves us we have limited control over which day it lands. You will get a tracking link by email when it dispatches. Add any delivery notes at checkout and we will pass them on where we can.
Hand delivery (Melbourne and local): we are typically in Melbourne on Fridays, once a fortnight, and can often schedule your delivery for a Friday. Message Jem if you need more flexibility.
KittaParts is modular threaded shelving made entirely from Australian timbers, flat-pack and reconfigurable, with a lifetime warranty on workshop-made furniture. It is designed to last and adapt, not be replaced every few years. We make everything in Castlemaine; we are not a dropshipper.
For a full side-by-side on materials, cost over time, and repairability, see our KittaParts vs flat-pack comparison.
Cheap flat-pack often optimises for lowest material cost. On large custom door panels (for example a wardrobe), we will sometimes use engineered board because it stays flatter and more stable, the right material for that job, not a shortcut for the whole unit.
Yes, ideally someone is there to sign. If you cannot be home, tell us and we will do our best to put arrangements in place so delivery goes as smoothly as possible.
FedEx deliveries are mostly outside our control once they leave the workshop, but you can add Special instructions at checkout for your local driver (safe place to leave the carton, and so on).
Once your order is ready, we email you. Unless we say otherwise, use the lead time on the product page as the guide. Pick-up is Mon–Thu, 8am–4:30pm at Castlemaine. Use code PICKUP at checkout for 10% off collection orders.
All of our products are flat-pack, designed for you to assemble at home. Kits arrive with labelled parts and assembly instructions: PDFs and videos where we have them, depending on how complex the set is.
On-site assembly is not included in standard catalog pricing. Message Jem if you need install help quoted.
Most customers successfully assemble at home. KittaParts, The Shelves, and Clip Crates are designed to go together without any special tools. If you are comfortable with flat-pack furniture, you should be fine.
Some more complex custom sets include cabinet-making hardware and special fittings. We supply instructions for installing and tuning those as required, and we can follow up with links to the right PDFs and videos for your order.
For large walls, heavy units, commercial spaces, or wall-mounted sets bearing significant weight, we recommend hiring a competent installer.
See our assembly guides for what we publish online.
We regularly install jobs in Melbourne and around Castlemaine, and in towns between Melbourne and Castlemaine on routes we already travel.
For high-value interstate jobs we will sometimes travel on special occasions. More often, we can recommend local installers we trust in your area.
Message Jem with your suburb, what you are building, and any access constraints.
Yes. Standard panels are listed on the website; custom dimensions are quoted individually. Large panels (for example boards around 2 m) may need a separate freight quote rather than standard courier. Message Jem with rough width, height, and how you plan to mount it.
Wall-mounted ThreadBoards use a split batten system. Fixings for the board itself are included where listed on the product page. Fixing into your wall (plaster, brick, studs, etc.) depends on the site. Message Jem if you are unsure for a custom size or commercial install.
Current shelf depths and peg accessories are on the ThreadBoard collection and individual product pages. For a custom panel, Message Jem with what you want to store and we will confirm compatible accessories.
Yes. Many workplace installs use Blackbutt for durability. KittaParts carries our lifetime warranty on workshop-made furniture. For offices, retail, and studios, Message Jem with traffic levels, fixings, and layout so we can confirm the right specification.
Yes, where appropriate for commercial installs, child safety, or high-traffic areas. Floor fixing is project-specific. Message Jem with your layout and we will advise on hardware and any custom quote.
For custom and larger jobs, yes. We typically share drawings for your approval before we cut. Standard catalog kits use our proven production files unless you have requested a variation.
Sometimes. Retired or one-off products may still be possible as a custom job, but pricing and freight can differ from when the item was a standard SKU. Message Jem with photos or the old product name and we will be upfront about feasibility and cost.
